What to see in the Venice lagoon by boat

The Venice lagoon is far more than the Grand Canal: 550 km² of shallow water dotted with islands, salt marshes and navigable channels that most visitors never see, because they stay within a two-hour walk of St Mark's Square. By boat those distances take minutes, and in half a day you reach places the vaporetti don't serve and coach groups never stop at.

The islands worth seeing

Murano is the closest: glass furnaces that have been burning for eight centuries, and a main canal best taken slowly from the water. Burano, with its fishermen's houses painted red, blue and green and its lacemaking tradition, is the most photographed spot in the northern lagoon. Torcello is where Venice began: a few dozen people live there today, but the cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta still holds its 11th-century Byzantine mosaics. Further south, Malamocco and the Lido show a different lagoon of quiet villages and beaches, while Poveglia and San Francesco del Deserto add the pull of the near-deserted islands.

Sunset over St Mark's Basin

In the last hour of daylight St Mark's Basin changes completely: the Doge's Palace, the Salute and San Giorgio Maggiore take on a warm light that from land you only glimpse one monument at a time. From the water you see them all at once, with no crowd in front of you. That's why we recommend the sunset tour to anyone with a single evening in Venice.

Why a private boat

  • Only your group is on board: no strangers, no schedule shared with anyone else.
  • The route bends to you: if you like an island, we stay longer.
  • The captain was born in Venice and tells the lagoon's story in Italian and English.
  • You leave from a jetty in central Venice, reachable on foot.

Departure and what to bring

Departures are from a jetty in central Venice, a few minutes' walk from the main vaporetto stops; the exact address comes with your confirmation email. Life jackets for adults and children are on board. We suggest comfortable shoes, a light sweater even in summer — it gets cooler out on the water — and sunglasses.
